FAQs about Instruction During Closure

Instructional Frequently Asked Questions during School Closure

We are planning and making decisions on how we will offer instruction remotely and will roll out a plan for our continuity of instruction soon.  In the time being, we have provided some responses to some instructional questions being asked.

Will there be STAAR testing this year?

STAAR Grades 3–8 Assessments

All State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) administrations scheduled for April, May, and June 2020 are cancelled. Student Success Initiative promotion/retention requirements found in the Texas Education Code (TEC), §28.0211 are waived for the 2019– 2020 school year. Lockhart ISD will have local discretion on whether students in grades 5 and 8 should advance to the next grade and we will provide you this information as soon as we are able.

STAAR End-of-Course (EOC) Assessments

Most students have already completed courses that have corresponding EOC assessments before their senior year. Normally, a student who has not passed up to two of his or her required STAAR EOC assessments may graduate through the individual graduation committee (IGC) process. For students who are still working to meet assessment graduation requirements as seniors in the 2019–2020 school year, required performance on academic assessments to graduate under TEC, §28.025(c) and §39.025(a) are being waived for spring 2020. Effectively, this means that current seniors may graduate through the IGC process regardless of the number of EOC assessments they still need to pass. We, in collaboration with our Lockhart HS and Pride HS administration teams, will provide additional guidance as we develop our plans.

STAAR Alternate 2

The STAAR Alternate 2 administration window required under TEC, §39.023(b) and scheduled for March 30 through April 21, 2020 is cancelled. For all students receiving special education services, the admission, review, and dismissal committee will continue to make educational decisions, including decisions related to required performance on academic assessments.

Will my student receive their report card that was due to be sent home or released on March 25?

All grades were due on Friday, March 13 and you may remotely access your child’s report card.  Students can access their grades by using their student ID (alphakey) and password to login to Skyward Student Access. If you are unable to access the report card, you may email or call your child’s teacher.

What if we don’t have access to a computer, laptop or tablet for online learning?

You should have been contacted by today, Monday, March 23, from your child’s classroom teacher to determine the accessibility that you have for at home learning.  If they were unable to reach you, they will be contacting you tomorrow, March 24. This information will help us decide how to support students in the case of a longer school closure beyond April 3.

What if we don’t have access to the internet?

To assist with at home learning, Spectrum is a local internet provider that is offering free internet service for 60 days beginning March 16 for K-12 and/or college students who do NOT already have a Spectrum broadband subscription and at any service level up to 100 Mbps.   To enroll, please call 1-844-488-8395. Installation fees will be waived for new student households.

Sprint is providing the option to turn on hot spots on your cell phones (at no charge) if you currently have them as a cell phone service provider. Please contact them directly
