LISD to provide school supplies and devices to all students this fall to address equity

Lockhart ISD announced it will provide school supplies and a Chromebook for every Kindergarten - 12th grade student this upcoming school year in order to address equity issues and build student  and district resilience.

The only item parents will need to purchase for students to go back to school is a backpack. Parents unable to purchase a backpack will be able to receive support from community organizations, such as 4:12 Kids and The Domitila H. & Timoteo R. Juarez, Sr. Excellence in Education Fund, as well as other groups who annually provide support to families in need of assistance for back to school preparation.

All Kindergarten - 12th grade students will be issued a school district Chromebook for use throughout the school year, transforming LISD into a 1:1 district--a long-held goal of school district leadership with implementation two years ahead of schedule.

LISD began its work toward becoming a 1:1 district in 2015 when it conducted a technology needs assessment and launched an initiative called the LISD Visionary Instruction Plan (VIP) to build the next generation classroom for students at every campus. The district has since had three cohorts of teachers transforming instruction and learning by leveraging technology in innovative ways. LISD VIP teachers participate in technology training to prepare them for successful implementation and are mentored by veteran LISD VIPS teachers technology instructional coaches. The district was set to become 1:1 in two years at the end of the fifth cohort, but the district was able to make strategic adjustments to bring the district to that reality this school year. LISD will train all of its teachers prior to the start of the school year to ensure a smooth transition to implementing 1:1 throughout the district.

“At a time when so much is out of our control, the district leadership team and the Board of Trustees decided we would focus on the things we could control to build resiliency for our students and district to ensure success in  student learning and growth,” said Superintendent Mark Estrada. “We are proud to support our students and families, especially during these difficult times. With these supplies, the technology devices, and the Lion Link internet services, we feel confident our students will be well-equipped for success.”
