LISD to launch string orchestra program in 2020
Lockhart ISD announced it will expand its fine arts program to include a string orchestra program beginning in the fall of 2020. Completely separate from the district’s Lockhart Roaring Lion Band, the program will be housed under the district fine arts department as its own program.

“We are excited to let the community know we are starting this program,” said Director of Fine Arts Kenny Vise. “With our district’s commitment to excellence in the fine arts, it is imperative we offer this missing piece.”

The program will take several years to build in order to reach a competitive level, starting first with beginning string classes for students in sixth through eight grades next year. Students will have opportunities to learn to play violin, viola, cello, or bass.

In the second year, the district will expand offerings, maintaining a sixth grade beginning strings class, offering new seventh and eighth grade string performing classes, and adding a ninth grade string performing class.

Kinder Morgan recently donated $100,000 to Lockhart ISD to support the district’s fine arts and athletics programs. This donation will enable the school district to launch the new string orchestra.

“The growth we have witnessed the past few years in fine arts students has been truly incredible and inspiring,” said Superintendent of Schools Mark Estrada. “The Gerry Ohlendorf Performing Arts Center provided a tremendous advantage to our students in becoming more competitive across Texas with facilities that support their success. Because of the high expectations and strength of our fine arts staff, our students are poised to continue to thrive. Offering the string orchestra program will heighten the excitement about our fine arts program. It’s a great time to be a Lockhart Lion!”

Parents of rising sixth through eighth grade students can expect to learn more information about the program this semester.
