Calendar Committee

Lockhart ISD is a District of Innovation (DOI). With this state designation, the district has flexibility to create an academic calendar that best meets the needs of Lockhart ISD students.

In the 2017-2018 school year, LISD set specific student achievement targets districtwide in order to boost student learning. The district's Board approved these targets as well as adopted a new vision statement for the district--Building a legacy of excellence.

This, in addition to the implementation of the Fundamental 5 instructional framework across the school district and a culture of tracking data to ensure effective instruction and learning, has generated an overall culture of high expectations throughout the district and within the community.

As the district considers academic calendar planning for the next school year, it has become important to also consider if the current academic calendar best supports student achievement, or if there are other innovative and flexible approaches the district can take to maximize instruction and learning. In fact, the District of Innovation Committee had recommended last year that the school district review the benefits of more flexible scheduling in the coming years.

With this, the school district formed a Calendar Committee, made up of staff and parent representatives, to review the needs of students, understand the pros and cons of different calendar approaches, and propose different options for consideration and adoption.

Through this work, the committee is now seeking feedback from stakeholders on different calendar options to create improved opportunities for student learning and decrease the potential for learning loss that can occur over traditional, longer summer breaks.

On the right side below, you will be able to review the different draft calendars, and while you’re on that webpage, you’ll have an option to submit your feedback. You’ll see two different options for 2018-2019, one is very similar to the calendar for this school year (2017-2018), and one is a “transition” calendars--not fully flexible, but containing some elements of a flexible schedule. There is also a draft for 2019-2020 to start the discussion about a fully-flexible schedule. It is not something being decided at this time, but it is something for which we are asking stakeholder feedback. All feedback received will be provided to the Calendar Committee for consideration.

Also, there will be a community forum Tuesday, February 6, at 6:00 pm in the ACC room at Gerry Ohlendorf Performing Arts Center (GOPAC) at Lockhart High School. All are welcomed to attend and provide feedback.

Thank you for reviewing these options and providing your valuable insight!

UPDATE: March 28, 2018-- The Board reviewed and approved starts and end dates for the 2018-2019 calendar, which looks very similar to the current year's calendar. We are in the process of reformatting that calendar, and we will post, email, and share out the final calendar as soon as it is ready. Thank you!
