LISD awarded nearly $1 million through 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant
Lockhart ISD, through its partnership with Region 13 Education Service Center, was recently awarded a grant by the Texas Education Agency. The Texas 21st Century Community Learning Centers-Texas ACE grant program will provide the district nearly $1 million dollars over a three-year period to boost student growth through after school programs for elementary students demonstrating the highest academic need.

In addition to academic intervention and support from teachers, students will receive a hot meal, help with homework, enrichment opportunities, and transportation, which is all funded by the grant. The district is in discussions to identify students, in partnership with principals, from each elementary campus.
Program evaluations of other Texas ACE programs reveal increased student attendance in school, increased test scores in reading and math, and decreased disciplinary incidents. Program participants also demonstrated an increased likelihood of promotion to the next grade.
“The district is pleased to have additional resources to provide supports and services to help our students with the most significant needs for academic intervention,” said Superintendent Mark Estrada. “The program provides an intentional extension of the day to deliver quality instruction and enrichment that will improve the outcomes of our students most in need of acceleration.”
Services will begin in September for identified students from each of the elementary schools. They will be transported to one of three sites hosting the grant program, including Bluebonnet Elementary School, Strawn Elementary School, and Navarro Elementary School.
“This could be a big game changer for so many of our Lions. We are excited about the possibilities,” said Estrada.
