Lockhart ISD Superintendent Susan K. Bohn served on a panel discussion Monday by four area school superintendents about ways in which public school districts prepare students to be future-ready in an ever-evolving workforce. The discussion was moderated by Texas Workforce Commissioner for Labor Julian Alvarez III and hosted by the Greater San Marcos Partnership (GSMP).
The sold-out event, held at the Embassy Suites San Marcos Hotel & Conference Center, was well-attended by hundreds of business representatives from the region interested in the workforce potential of the fast-growth corridor between Austin and San Antonio.
In addition to Dr. Bohn, superintendents from Hays CISD, San Marcos CISD, and Dripping Springs ISD, answered questions about how school districts prepare students for a rapidly changing workforce, the types of advanced academics and career and technical education programs offered to students, and how the districts contribute to economic growth and success in the region.
“We are preparing students for jobs that don’t exist yet. School is not like it was like when we were in school,” said Bohn. “We really are focusing on what students need to be critical thinkers, because we are not necessarily able to teach them the exact skills they will need to know for the job that they’ll have 20 years from now. So, we have to teach them how to think critically, how to communicate well, how to work in teams, all of those things.”
Bohn shared Lockhart ISD actively tracks statewide, regional, and local information about what communities need. The district looks at data from the Texas Workforce Commission and Texas Education Agency about the fastest-growing, highest-paying areas for our students to enter into when they graduate. Additionally, the district works with local leaders to identify the needs of Lockhart businesses.
This is one event in a series of activities the district has been involved in to help spur economic growth in the Caldwell County area.
The GSMP serves as the regional economic development organization of the City of San Marcos, Hays County, and Caldwell County.
Bohn is a member of the GSMP Board, serving as a representative for public schools in the region.
